The 108th Giro d’Italia will start on the on the 9th of May 2025.
The race will start from Durrës, Albania. This will be the first abroad Grande Partenza since Budapest (Hungary) in 2022.
The first Giro d’Italia big start abroad was organized in 1965. It was “only” San Marino, the small state incorporated into the body of Italy, but it was in fact the first foreign start of the race.
Most notable foreign starts were: from Belgium in 1973 (the peak of Eddy Merckx’s career), from Northen Ireland in 2014 (in the very same year when Tour de France started in England, so two of the three grand tours started from the UK), from Israel (the vey first time a cycling grand tour started from outside Europe)in 2018.
Take a look at the list of every Grande Partenza outside Italy>>
As usual, the Grande Partenza will include three stages in the host country.
Stage 1 Durrë (Durrazzo) – Tiranë (Tirana) on 9 May 2025
Stage 2 Tiranë (Tirana) -Tiranë (Tirana) individual time trial on 10 May 2025
Stage 3 Vlorë (Valona) -Vlorë (Valona) on 11 May 2025.
After the three stages in Albania there will be a rest day, when the peloton will be trasported back to Italy. Thus, instead of the usual two, this year’s Giro d’Italia will includes three rest days. (Nevertheless, it’s not that uncommon, usually when a grand tour starts far from home, there used to be an additional rest day to manage the trasition).
Giro d’Italia 2025 will end on 1 June 2025 in Rome.
ABOUT THE GIRO D’ITALIA 2025 PROJECT OF PELOTONTALES BLOG
PelotonTales was created by Anita Pethő (literary critic and expert of historical fiction) in 2020 as the English version of her long-running Hungarian cycling blog TOURázzunk együtt. Coming from a different background with a rather theoretical and not practical approach (she was never an athlete, neither amateur, nor professional), both project has been focusing on a more historical aspects and broader sociocultural context of the sport.
